Italy is a country in Southern Europe which became a nation state in 1861.The Italian Republic has its main boundaries with France, Croatia, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves within Italian territory. Today, Italy is a highly developed country, a member of the G8 and a founding member of what is now the European Union, having signed the Treaty of Rome in 1957.

Italy has given us a wealth of poets, thinkers writers, cinematographers and artists such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Mussolini, Leonardo da Vinci, Machiavelli, Puccini, Verdi and Platini.

Italy is also famous for its cuisine, having provided the world with pasta, pizza, ice cream and espresso coffe whch have all become staples in the western world
